As important as choosing the correct team build for your group is choosing the correct venue to hold your team build.
There are a whole range of different factors that come into play when making a choice regarding the correct venue to use for your team build. A few of these are:
Is accommodation required or is a day venue more suitable? What is your budget? Do you require meals? What team build options are available at the venue? Travel time?
Is accommodation required or is a day venue more suitable?
In choosing an overnight venue or resort there are a number of important factors to br looked at. Organisers need to take into account the tone of the trip. Is it primarily aimed at a fun, relaxed time for the group where the aim is to unwind? In this case often it is better to pass up the fancier 4 or 5 star resorts and hotels in favour of a 3 star or self catering resort. Luxury resorts often impose strict rules on their residents and where part of the team building goal is to allow th egroup to 'let down their hair', such a resort is rarely suitable.
On the other hand when a group is being rewarded for achieving a particular performance goal or reaching a certain target or are being insentivised to do the same then luxury resorts including extras such as spa packages may be a good idea. As with choosing your team build activity, it is always a case of horses for courses.
What is your budget
It goes without saying that budget is a key factor to include when considering a venue. However this is often overlooked and it should be born in mind that the quoted cost is not always the full picture. Always check the inclusions and exclusions to ensure that you aren't going to be landed with a hefty bill afterwards. Make arrangements regarding how bill items such as drinks will be settled before committing to a resort. Also remember to add the cost of the teambuild.
It is usefull to note that some team building options may include the cost of the venue. For example the uShaka Challenge Team Build includes entrance to uShaka Marine World Theme Park.
Do you require Meals
This may seem like an obvious consideration however it is worth noting that many sucessful team build getaways take place at self catering resorts. Obviously this should only be taken into account when the client is happy to self cater. Often some of the best bonding moments occur around a braai or barbecue. Sometimes a picnic basket can in itself be an exciting group activity.
If the group requires catering or restaurant meals always consider the following factors: How will the meals effect the timing of the day/getaway How will you you settle the bill? How are you going to cater for drinks, is there a policy regarding drinking alcohol What are the dress codes at the restaurant in question? Halaal or kosher team members?
What Team Building options are available at the venue?
It is also important to consider that not every venue can cater for all teambuilding options. Often luxury resorts will not allow team building companies to use certain areas of the resort. Is there a beach close to the resort and do they have open areas available? What if it rains? Always confirm with the hotel or resort in question before you book regarding what can be done on site.
Travel Time
Often the travelling time involved results in the resort being unsuitable for the requirements of a team build. It would be crazy to travel 5 hours for a one-night breakaway. One good way to get around this would be to incorporate an amazing race teambuild whereby the teambuild is incorporated into the travelling component. Also be carefull to incorporate extra time when taking into account travelling as delays and hold ups can occur.
