Island Rock Retreat offers self-catering accommodation and is situated some 500 km north of Maputo, at Jangamo Beach, just south of Inhambane.
Accommodation
There are 3 different types of accommodation at Island Rock Resort
Grass and Reed Casitas: The Casitas at Island Rock are comfortable reed and grass rooms that line the beach front or are nestled in between the Beach Dunes. There are a number of different configuration of Casitas available.
All the Casitas have their own kitchen from which to prepare your local seafood dishes. The Casitas are very popular with a definitive marooned island feel, yet they are very comfortable with the added benefit of being relatively cool in the summer.
Island Rock Resort has a number of different Casitas available:
All the casitas have: 220V electric lights and power points, Beds, Kitchen, Sombrero and Pots, Pans, Cutlery and Crockery are supplied with each unit.
Recommendations: A short electrical extension lead is recommended. Bring your own fridge, gas bottles, chairs, table and bed linen.
Lapas: The Lapas at Island Rock Resort are constructed of brick and mortar. Lapas is a defenitive Southern African defintion which refers to more than one structure that is based in a loose circle. At Island Rock Resort the Lapas have been built with groups and families in mind.
Each Lapa is set apart from the camp and nestled between the beach dune and indigenous bush. There are 2 Lapas available.
Lapa Orca has 5 Houses that sleep 4 individuals in 4 single beds. There is a Communal kitchen area which includes the following for each house:
Lapa Lagosta has 5 houses that sleep 5 individuals per house (1 double bed and 3 single beds). There is a Communal kitchen area which includes the following for each house:
The Island Rock Resort Campsite is well laid out campsite nestled in the beach dunes along the Inhambane Coast. Each campsite is bordered by the wild indigenous bush with private, semi-private and communal sites available.
Island Rock Resort has 37 campsites available as single and group sites. There are 2 main large communal campsites available which can accommodate approximately 20 people each.
There are a further 35 smaller campsites. Some of the smaller campsites have sombreros available, so ensure to ask if one is available while booking.
There are electrical plug points available at each campsite.
Island Rock Resort has it's own water source that is tested frequently. Fresh drinkable water is available and can be fetched from the abolution blocks.
Vehicle and trailer rooftop campers are welcome, campsites are available that are accessible by vehicle and trailers with rooftop tents. Please ensure that you let Island Rock know your requirements when booking.

Island Rock Resort is aptly named after the huge rock at the end of a massive reef system which extends from the shore for approximately 3 km, following the contour of the beach.
Activities
Diving & Snorkeling: The ocean, as clean and clear as when God first made it, is filled with an awesome array of tropical splendor including tropical fish, coral, dolphins, rays, whale sharks, real sharks and ancient sea turtles.
Fishing: The deep sea fishing potential of the Island Rock area is huge. Boats and Jet skis are welcome and the reef system enables safe launching. A launching license is required and can be obtained at the Resort.
Quad biking: Driving of quad bikes at the resort is allowed, but with consideration to others. Island Rock Resort has a 3km track at the back of the resort in the dunes available for enthusiasts. We are busy extending the track, on completion it will be 6km. Take your picnic basket with and stop to look at the breathtaking sunset.
Nature: Island Rock Resort is located in a pristine natural area offering bird-watchers, naturalists, hikers and all those who appreciate nature the ideal opportunity to get out of the city routine and enjoy the beauty of the area.
Relax: The beach, the hot tropical sun, good local beer and peri-peri prawns. Spend your days on the beach or whole afternoons swimming, exploring the underwater topography. Lie on your back at night looking at shooting stars and sleep late if you feel like it!
