Environment Info
The beautiful seaside village of Hermanus has a proud history dating to the early 1800's when Hermanus Pieters, a shepard and teacher followed the elephant path down to the sea where he discovered a fresh spring . He chose to set up camp here not only because of the unrivaled beauty, but it also offered fine grazing for his livestock.
Over the years Hermanus has become known as a majestic holiday destination, offering locals and tourists the best land based whale watching platform in the world. Whilst the town has grown with the developing of a new harbour and a village square complete with whale watching tower, locals are careful to uphold the legacy left by one of the first regular visitors to Hermanus - William Hoy. As general manager of the railways he ensured the natural beauty of Hermanus would remain unspoiled by blocking any attempt to extend the railway line to the village. His efforts ensure that just 100 metres from Mitchell guesthouse is the only railway station in the country with no trains.
Activities
Hermanus boasts many more activities than just whale watching. For the madly adventurous there is seawater kayaking and paragliding from the mountain tops. Or for the thrill seeking nature lovers there is always the experience of a great white shark cage dive. There are also boat trips that will take you as close as is legally possible to see the great Southern Right Whales which have been coming to Hermanus for decades to calf.
Our Winelands, the most southerly in Africa, boast a range of fine cultivars and have tasting facilities for you to experience first hand the regions harvests.
The “fynbos†in Hermanus is the environment of the worlds largest flora varieties, making the nature trails and cliff path walks an experience not to be missed.
The village also has wonderful quaint stores and restaurants for you to pass your time in if adventure is not for you. All in all Hermanus is bound to heighten your senses.
