St Francis Bay - "Best Kept Secret" of the Eastern Cape!
The gateway of the "Garden Route" is now on the map! First sighted in 1575 by Portuguese Sailors and hence named after the Patron Saint of St Francis, St Francis Bay is a mere one hours drive from Port Elizabeth. This tranquil village with its meandering waterways, picturesque thatched houses, abundant birdlife and golden miles of beaches is the perfect spot to just break-away! A unique eco-destination, mild year-round temperatures and the longest sunshine hours on the South African Coast ensure that St Francis Bay is a sought after destination for the discerning and adventurous traveler.
Activities
REMEMBER THE FAMILY! St. Francis Bay boasts a beautifully laid-out 18- hole Golf Course, where you are most welcome. However, remember to consider the family as well; take them to Shamwari Game Reserve, Kariega Game Reserve, Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve, Kwandwe Game Reserve, Addo National Elephant Park, or game viewing at Schotia Safaris. All lovely attractions within 1-1/2 hours drive from St Francis Bay.
THE SAND RIVER DUNES: Hiking along the Sand River is recommended at any time off the year. If you are lucky, you may see the beautiful Crystal Pools. The water in the Sand River flows underground, over the hard rocky substrate that underlines the dunes. After heavy rains, the water table rises to form Crystal Pools.
ECO BOAT CRUISES: Enjoy boat cruises around the Bay. You'll discover abundant bird and marine life - including penguins, whales and dolphins. Boats may not venture closer than 300m to any whale.
RIVER CRUISES: Explore the upper reaches of the Kromme River on a comfortable motor launch. Stop over at Stony Boma River Camp for a picnic or barbecue. After lunch, relax or go for a hike, canoeing, fishing or birding on the river.
SURFING: A photographer in the 60's Bruce Brown, searched the world for the Perfect Wave. He found it at St Francis Bay, and named it 'Bruce's Beauties' - St Francis Bay is one of the world's great surf spots - and YOU need not be a surfer to enjoy this graceful sport. Delight in watching the followers "search" for the perfect wave!
MARINA CRUISE: Take an hour-long trip and sip a soothing drink or two as you experience South Africa's own 'Little Venice' aboard a comfortable cruiser. Picturesque white-walled thatched homes reflect in the tranquil waters of the meandering canals whilst the ever-present songs of resident bird life serenade you.
IRMA BOOYSEN FLORA RESERVE: During the development of Cape St. Francis, Irma Booysen persuaded her husband, the original owner of the farm Ongegunde Vryheid, to set land aside to protect the fynbos of the area. The Reserve lies within 200m of the Cape St. Francis Resort. A walk through the reserve is a must-do for all lovers of nature and indigenous flora such as this fynbos. Maps and plant guides are available at the Resort's reception office.
GAME & LION PARK: Enjoy the wildlife at Seaview Game & Lion Park with 40 species of African wildlife to view, including Lions, jackals, lynx, crocodiles , giraffe, zebra, baboons, monkeys, wildebeest, and many others.
BUNGEE: For the thrill-seekers, experience the adrenalin of a 216m bungee jump, the highest Bungee Jump in the world. If you get enough of a thrill from being in a high spot without the jump, take a guided tour over the largest bridge in Africa.
LALIBELA GAME RESERVE: This Big Five private game reserve spans 5 ecosystems (valley bushveld, savanna grassland, fynbos, riverine forest and acacia woodland). Consisting of 7,500 hectares (approximately 18,500 acres), there are no public roads running through the property and all the animals including predators, are free-roaming throughout the reserve. Experience a game drive in an open vehicle where you come face to face with a multitude of game.
CHEETAH BREEDING CAMP: Visit the Cheetah Breeding Camp. This camp offers the unique possibility to experience cheetahs from several age groups up close while they are playing, relaxing or being fed.
FOREST CANOPY TOURS: Have you ever wanted to know what birds feel like when they fly? Come close to this experience while partaking on a Forest Canopy Tour.
ELEPHANT WALKING SAFARIS: Experience the famout Knysna forest alongside our African elephants, A guided nature walk through the fynbos, into the valley and stunning indigenous and exotic forest. Touch and feed the gently giants.
MONKEYLAND: Monkeyland offers visitors safaris conducted by experienced game rangers where you can expect to see many species of monkeys as well as a large variety of forest dwelling birds.
BIRDS OF EDEN: Birds of Eden is the largest free flight bird aviary in the world. A top eco-tourism attraction in the Garden Route of South Africa. The adventure of walking across our 128m suspension bridge, the longest one of its kind in Africa, above the forest canopy.
