COUNTRY: South Africa
AREA: Zululand and Maputaland
Summary
When divers, fishermen and eco-adventurers can resist the call of the great African outdoors no more, they return to one place - Sodwana in northern KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
In the heart of the Maputaland region, close to the pristine Lake Shazibe, nestling behind the world's highest natural dunes, a short distance from the sea, Sodwana Bay Lodge has been carefully designed to match the rustic eco-orientated nature of the region.
Sodwana Bay Lodge is about 6 hours drive Johannesburg and 3 and half hours from Durban.
Accommodation
Relax at Sodwana Bay Lodge in the comfort of one of our 21 twin-bed, reed and thatch chalets. All chalets have en-suite shower and toilet, ceiling fan and mosquito nets; are serviced daily, and include complimentary tea and coffee making facilities.
The chalets are situated right in the heart of the Lodge's diving and fishing centres and are adjacent to the volleyball court, Leatherbacks restaurant, swimming pool and bar.
Food
Sodwana Bay Lodge has much to offer when it comes to eating out. The lodge restaurant - Leatherbacks Seafood and Grill, boasts a varied menu, attentive service and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
For a more social dining experience, communal barbecues in a Zulu Boma (enclosure) have proven to be a most suitable alternative and are generally accompanied by zestful ethnic dancing.
And for those who love to relax, hot and sunny afternoons can be spent at the lodge's popular poolside bar, where guests can swap experiences.
Breakfast and dinner is included during your stay at Sodwana Bay Lodge.
Environment Info
The warm Indian Ocean currents of the Mozambique Channel wash onto the shores of Maputaland, a timeless realm of astounding bio-diversity and beauty. Here, on the relatively untouched eastern seaboard of southern Africa, wide lakes and extensive river estuaries shimmer with life, fertile swamp and sand forest abound with rare and protected animal and plant species, while towering dunes shelter golden beaches from the lush interior.
Venturing oceanwards, the seabed is bejewelled with coral reefs and formations of dramatic splendour, staging an unceasing pageant of every imaginable kind of marine life.
Africa's renowned "Big-5" - elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard - are complimented by a rich array of antelope and bird species. Here the "Big-5" can become the prized "Big-6" as humpback whales spout and gambol close to shore.
