Accommodation

Montagu Country Hotel consists of 33 bedrooms: 11 Luxury and 22 Classic.

Luxury Rooms: Our luxury rooms are substantially more spacious than the classic rooms. All luxury rooms also have separate bath and shower where the Classic rooms mostly have shower over bath.

Four of our luxury rooms are in a Victorian Villa built in 1905 in the garden behind the main hotel. The Villa is light-heartedly furnished with soft colours of beige, browns, rust and black, which gives one the feeling of Victorian splendour with a strong element of Africa. Some beautiful Antique pieces round off this modernistic approach to decor. The Villa offers four bedrooms - 2 twin-bedded, 1 queen and 1 king size, each with a unique view of either the gardens or the mountains.

Classic Rooms: Our classic rooms, although somewhat smaller than our luxury rooms are creations of extreme comfort for our guests. Gay colours typical of the Art Deco period are being used and every room is furnished with a beautiful Art Deco dressing table and fabrics of that period. Most classic rooms are in the main hotel.

The Hotel also offers:

Stylish Reception Rooms: The timeless elegance of the Art Deco period is reflected in the Egyptian inspired pieces of furniture used in the foyer to the hotel. The Charleston inspired purple dressed "lady" overlooking while you sign the register wishes you a hearty welcome. Your luggage will be taken to your bedroom by one of our well trained porters after having served you a welcoming drink of muscadel, a grape variety which Montagu became famous for over the years. This was incidentally the first grape variety planted in the Cape by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 after his arrival.

The non-smoking lounge is an airy room which flows out onto the spacious wooden deck at the front of the hotel. From the deck one has the most beautiful view of the rugged mountains lovingly cradling the village. The smokers' lounge has its own private pub with flat screen TV. Guests can follow sport matches here, or watch a selection of our movies after dinner. This room scan also be converted into a conference rooms, with windows that can be blocked out completely. The style is also Art Deco, with beautiful pieces collected over the years.

Beautiful Gardens: Huge shady trees surround the hotel which makes sitting outside on a lazy lounger a must. Masses of Iceberg roses line the path to the heated mineral pool while the fragrance of herbs carry on the air as you approach the water spouting statue of the lady, forming the focus of this part of the garden. All the time you are aware of the majestic mountains surrounding the village while strolling in the garden.

Health Centre: Along with offering massages and various other treatments, the uniqueness of our Health Center lies in the healing mineral water, which is to be found in Montagu. The water used in our 'Mineral Bath' pushes from 120 meters under the ground to the surface at a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. It is then heated to be used in our bath, which is hygienically cleaned after each usage. Users of our bath claims especially relief of arthritic pains and other ailments of joints.

Food

The dining room, The Wild Apricot Restaurant, positioned in symmetry to the foyer, is the epitome of old world elegance and space. White table cloths and period cutlery takes you back to bygone days when serving a meal was an art form more than merely eating a meal. Our menu will also take you back to yore when tasty mutton was used to create a pie smacking of real sheep that ate healthy food in green pastures. Bobotie, another popular dish in our restaurant, might be a traditional dish, but we serve it with a fling to surprise you beyond imagination when it is served.

We offer a menu to satisfy all tastes.

The reaction of one of our more senior guests was that our dining room reminds her of having dinner in the dining room of the Warwick Castle, one of the Union Line Steamers, in 1933.

Soft music played on a baby grand, the romantic light of candles, delightful traditional South African Cuisine at its best, waitresses that are both friendly and efficient all contributes to an evening to remember.

The residents pub, The Dog and Trumpet, is where pre-dinner drinks and after dinner night caps are served until late.

Environment Info

Route 62, where Montagu Country Hotel can be found, is the historical route which was the main link between Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route and Cape Town before the N2 highway was built.

It not only offers a 70 km shorter option between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, but also runs through the most beautiful mountain passes, alternated by typical Klein Karoo vegetation, vineyards and fruit orchards. It passes through 14 beautifully preserved villages where time has stood still for 40 years.

Montagu lies nestled between two mountains. Its crystal clear air is free of any pollution. It is strategically situated between the Garden Route and Cape Town, offering a most picturesque drive.

The weather is perfect - far enough South to escape the heat of the Klein Karoo; far enough North to get away from the long wet winters of the Cape. In winter, the days are warm and sunny, with the occasional hint of rainfall. Autumn brings on a kaleidoscope of colours. As for October, there isn't a place that can compare to beauty and the abundance of the roses.

Montagu is host to less than ten thousand inhabitants, with a variety of entrepreneurs, hoteliers, a cabinetmaker, a cheese maker, a teddy bear maker, restaurants, and artists.
