COUNTRY: Botswana
AREA: Botswana
Summary
Chitabe Camp borders the famous Moremi Game Reserve, in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Chitabe Camp has all the scenery you would expect to enjoy on a luxury African safari - open floodplains, waterways, marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodlands, riverine areas and open grasslands. The wildlife in this breathtaking mix of the Okavango Delta is as diverse as it is prolific: from elephant to impala and lion to wild dog.
Chitabe Camp consists of eight spacious, luxury Meru-style tents, and the fact that the Camp is designed for a maximum of 16 guests means that warm, personal service is always a priority.
As part of the Wilderness Safaris Group, your stay at Chitabe will be as all-inclusive as possible, with the core activities such as game drives, nature walks, boating and all meals included in the price of accommodation.
Accommodation
Chitabe Camp's eight spacious Meru-style tents are built on elevated wooden decks amongst the trees of the Okavango Delta. Each tent has twin beds, en-suite facilities and an indoor as well as an outdoor shower.
The thatched dining area, pub and lounge area are built on raised decks to provide superb views across the Okavango Delta floodplain, and a pool allows guests to cool off in the heat of the day.
Chitabe Camp also has two elevated platforms located in the reserve, one of which is within walking distance of the camp. Guests can experience a "sleep out" in the Okavango Delta under the stars in full comfort and safety.
Food
Meals at Chitabe Camp comprise wholesome, home-style cooking at elegantly set dining tables (under the stars, under thatch or canvas, or even in outdoor bomas) where guests can relax and discuss the day's events with fellow travellers, guides and hosts.
Environment Info
Chitabe Camp is located in the Chitabe Concession, which covers 28 000 hectares of pristine Okavango Delta wilderness. It borders the well known Moremi Game Reserve and is nestled between two main river systems, the Gomoti to the east and the Santantadibe to the west.
Chitabe Camp is unique even in the Okavango Delta in that it harbours such a variety of habitats within close proximity, ranging from classic Okavango Delta scenery with Illala palms dotting floodplains to open savannah and acacia woodlands. A finger of perennial swamps inundated by water throughout the year extends into the Chitabe Concession and the area is also dominated by seasonally flooded areas which transform 56% of the concession from dry floodplains into a lush oasis, when the annual flood waters meander through. All this gives rise to a surprising diversity of species, which allows Chitabe Camp to offer guests a wide range of luxury african safaris, game viewing and birding experiences.
The high numbers of impala in the area means that leopard are often seen near Chitabe Camp. Also encountered are buffalo, elephant, lion and occasional sightings of wild dog, the subject of the Botswana Wild Dog Research Project that takes place in the area.
The birdlife is excellent and varies throughout the year, depending on water levels and season. Raptors are abundant here: including the African Hawk Eagle and the Hooded Vulture often nests on the island. Game drives in the palm-filled landscape of Chitabe Camp often produce families of Ground Hornbill, Greater Honeyguide, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Red-billed Hornbill, Gabar Goshawk and coveys of Red-billed Francolin.
Activities
Luxury African safaris at Chitabe Camp include day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, nature walks and spectacular birdwatching. The multiplicity of habitats surrounding Chitabe Camp means there is an abundance of wildlife to be seen, including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, tsessebe, impala and, occasionally, wild dogs.
Night drives with spotlight also provide opportunities for guests to see nocturnal mammals such as civet, serval, genet, porcupine and aardwolf.
Guided walking safaris and 'Sleep outs' on the open air platforms are also available on request.
