Summary

Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Situated at the base of Africa's only active volcano Oldonyo L'Engai (Mountain of God).

Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is a haven for literally thousands of lesser flamingo's and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth.

Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction - the area around the lake is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful. And Lake Natron Tented Camp is the ideal, luxurious base from which to experience it.

Accommodation

Unique in its setting, Lake Natron Camp is set back in a grove of trees slightly removed from the dusty terrain of the lake. Modern and clean A framed safari tents offer showers, comfortable beds and a verandah with your own private view of the incredible landscape.

Activities

Climbing the L'Engai volcano can be arranged with one of our highly experienced guides. No special equipment is required but it is a hard, climb to the top through notoriously spiky vegetation. However you will be rewarded with some spectacular magma flows bubbling at over 500°C at the top.

If a slightly less demanding walk would suit, we can arrange for a walk followed by either a picnic breakfast or sundowners by the lake.

There is a nearby freshwater waterfall where you can swim, cool off and relax!

The following activities can be pre-booked or with camp manager on arrival:

  • Lake Natron excursions: see the flamingos, learn about the environment, can include picnic.
  • Hot Springs; Sundowners / Bush diner walks; Waterfall hike – swim, cool off and relax!
  • Springs of Engaresero River; ½ day trekking possibilities on the escarpment.
  • Maasai cultural excursions (Maasai Boma visit, Maasai medicine walk, Maasai Dance).
  • Climbing Oldonyo Lengai (depending on activity of the volcano).
