Summary

Mbuluzi Game Reserve is a bushveld paradise in the north eastern lowveld of Swaziland.

Mbuluzi lies in the foothills of the Lubombo Mountains and is part of a 60,000 ha private conservancy that includes Mlawula and Shewula Nature Reserves and Hlane Royal National Park.

Luxury self-catering accommodation is available in the Reserve at a very affordable rate.

Accommodation

There are at present three lodges in Mbuluzi Game Reserve, offering 21 beds between them.

Each lodge is unique in design and atmosphere; each offering our visitors a chance to relax and unwind in peaceful surroundings. The lodges are all air-conditioned and beautifully furnished. Fully equipped kitchens make self-catering a pleasure, and the comfortable living areas, spacious verandahs and wooden decks are perfect for al fresco meals.

Singwe Lodge has four double rooms with en suite bathrooms and showers. Two of the rooms have a beautiful outdoor shower just off the bathroom and they also have their own wooden deck, leading off the bedroom, that overlooks the Mlawula River. A perfect place to sit with an early morning cup of tea and look for the uncommon African Finfoot or watch as a Giant Kingfisher dives for his breakfast.

Mphangele Lodge has two double rooms with en suite bathrooms, and a single room. This is an smaller lodge with a more intimate atmosphere. A large verandah leads off the living area and a path takes one down to a lovely wooden deck that overlooks the Mlawula River. A peaceful place to while away an afternoon, listening to the birds, and, if you are lucky, catch a glimpse of the timid bushbuck picking its way delicately along the river bank.

Nkankanka Lodge has four double rooms, with en suite bathrooms and showers. Each has its own view into the bush or towards the river and sliding doors that allow you to enjoy the peace and beauty of the bush from the privacy of your room.

Food

Accommodation at Mbuluzi Game Reserve is self-catering, but the lodge kitchens are fully equipped, so all you need bring is your own food and drinks.

Catering can however be arranged in the lodges or visitors can go to one of the nearby country clubs for excellent meals.

Other activities that can be enjoyed at the clubs include golf, squash, tennis and bowls.

Environment Info

Mbuluzi Game Reserve was established in the northeastern corner of Swaziland as a conservation area in 1980, and set up as a shareblock company in 1993. The well appointed executive style lodges are luxurious and cater for the more discerning holiday-maker.

Privately run and maintained, shareholders and visitors have the privilege of access to 60,000 hectares of traversable game land including the adjoining Mlawula and Hlane Game Reserves, while enjoying the quality of a private lodge and well appointed camp sites.

The park is bound by the beautiful Mbuluzi River and the Lubombo mountain range in the east and boasts a remarkable diversity of habitat. Flora includes the massive riverine forests with towering sycamore figs and wild date palms, rocky cliffs, cycad forests, knobthorn savannah, acacia bushveld and open grasslands.

Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in Mbuluzi, including rarities such as Pels Fishing Owl, Dwarf Bittern, Narina Trogon, African Finfoot and Crested Guinea fowl .

Daytime game viewing includes Giraffe, kudu, wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra, impala, bushbuck, Nyala, duiker, warthog, jackal, hyena and crocodile, with occasional visits by Hippo.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the sunset period when nature draws her second breath. Walk through the veld or take a night drive with a spotlight and experience the excitement of seeing the nocturnal species including leopard, hyena, civet, genet, jackal, honey-badger, serval, antbear and pangolin!

The property is crossed by two meandering perennial rivers. The Mlawula and the Mbuluzi which support a healthy population of largescale yellowfish, as well as barbel and bream - a flyfisher's paradise.

At an altitude of between 150 and 460 meters, and only 70 kilometers from the Mozambique coast, the climate is typical of the bushveld of the Eastern Seaboard - warm during the day, with pleasant cool seabreezes in the evenings.

Activities

Walking & Mountain biking: There is a well laid out network of trails and guests can walk or bike from their lodge, or drive and start a trail from some other point of interest. The trails inter-link and can be travelled individually or connected to make a longer outing. The beauty of Mbuluzi with its diverse habitat can be enjoyed to the full while on a trail. The rewards are many as one walks along river banks, across rivers, through open savannah, into cool wooded areas and up rocky ridges.

Visitors have access to approximately 60,000 hectares of traversable game land including the adjoining Mlawula and Hlane Game Reserves. You will be able to enjoy this remarkable Southern African wilderness; take unrestricted walks on well-defined trails; challenge your fishing skills or just enjoy the river courses and game drives while discovering the wonderfully diverse animal and birdlife.

Game Viewing: There are many mammal species to be seen at Mbuluzi, including giraffe, kudu, nyala, impala, bushbuck, warthog, hippo, crocodile, wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra, duiker, bush pig, jackal and crocodile. A study of the spoor will make a trail all the more interesting.

Birdwatching: This is the ideal place for the keen birder with over 300 species having been recorded, including some rare and uncommon species, such as the Whitebacked Night Heron, African Finfoot, Narina Trogon, Yellow Wagtail, Greyhooded Kingfisher, Pels Fishing Owl, Dwarf Bittern and Crested Guinea fowl.

Tree Spotting: While looking and listening for birds, the magnificent variety of indigenous trees will be most apparent.

Camping: Rustic campsite facilities include ablution blocks with hot showers (heated by a donkey boiler) and reed bomas to keep out the wind and give some privacy. Firewood and lanterns are provided. Rapids with beautiful rock formations are just below the campsite.

Fishing: The two perennial rivers support a healthy population of largescale yellowfish, as well as barbel and bream - a flyfisher's paradise.

Clubbing, eating out and entertainment: Nearby amenities include the Tambankulu, Mhlume, Simunye and Tshaneni Country Clubs which have restaurants, tennis and squash courts and swimming pools; the latter two also have golf courses set amongst typical bushveld savannah.

For boating enthusiasts, the Sand River Dam and yacht club is 40 kilometers away.
