Summary
Situated in the vast Balule Nature Reserve which is part of the world famous Greater Kruger National Park in northern South Africa, 4-star Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge offers an African bush experience at its very best!
At our small, intimate Lodge, with only 20 beds, guests are assured of comfort and unobtrusive attentiveness, combined with an intimacy with nature. Come and be especially close to the African Spirit here.
The Lodge is easily accessible - just 5 to 6 hours' drive from Johannesburg - yet one enters an entirely different world once within the camp. Life slows down to the rhythms of nature and the rising and setting of the sun dictates our movements. The emphasis here is upon close-up encounters with Africa’s spectacular wildlife, from the mighty elephant, the impressive lion or the miniscule termite.
The many creatures that have made Mohlabetsi their home invite you to join them in their world. Our hospitable staff is on hand to ensure a stay to be savoured and remembered forever.
Accommodation
There are only six African rondawels and two Family Lodges at 4-star Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge, ensuring the luxury of a small and intimate camp. The Lodge is newly renovated and offers a wonderful base for your Safaris.
The Lodge is nestled under age-old trees with a panoramic view over the bush and onto a well-frequented waterhole. The shady lawns, with chaise lounges, create a wonderful scene of tranquility. The entrance is a thatched portico leading onto a lounge, bar and dining area. Alma’s spectacular Curio shop offering locally made souvenirs is well worth a visit too. Our Boma is a reeded enclosure with a crackling log fire, where sumptuous dinners are served.
A rondawel is a typical African “round hut†under thatch. They are tastefully appointed in an ethnic theme and each have a marvelous al fresco shower for a wonderful “close to nature“ experience. The rooms are fully equipped with amenities and toiletries as well as hairdryers and personal safes. The windows and entrance are insect-proofed for your comfort and there is a ceiling fan for those warm summer nights. There are four twin bedded rondawels and two with a king size bed. It is also possible to place a small sleeper bed in the room for a young child.
Our Family Lodges offer superb comfort for small parties. Each Lodge has two rooms with an interleading door for privacy. One room has a Queen bed and the other has two single beds - it is possible to add a sleeper bed too, thereby accommodating five guests. Each room has its own facilities and al fresco shower. The Lodges are equipped similarly to the Rondawels.
Food
Dinners are a social affair at Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge, with guests mingling with their hosts in the boma area as they enjoy fireside cuisine with an African influence. Tasty starters are accompanied by our famous "pot brood", freshly baked in a cast iron pot nestled in the coals. There is always a poultry dish as well as a traditional meat meal for main course and one of these dishes is always cooked over the fire. Desserts are usually a fruit flambe, prepared with much fanfare as the chef disappears behind a wall of flame! During the warmer summer evenings, we serve candlelit dinners under the stars.
Activities
Mohlabetsi Safari Lodge is in the heart of the vast Balule Nature Reserve which is incorporated into the Greater Kruger National Park. This area is home to an array of spectacular wildlife, including the "Big Five". World famous for its abundance of animal, bird and reptile life, we have sighted over 30 mammal species, 220 different kinds of birds and a dazzling variety of reptiles, insects and plants.
We conduct guided game drives in specially modified Landrovers, renowned for their comfort and reliability. As the vehicles are open, you are assured of excellent all-round visibility, as well as the excitement of meeting Africa's Big Five close up with nothing between you! Our rangers are well versed in ensuring that you have a thrilling and informative safari.
The Bush takes on a different aspect when on foot. Your experienced ranger will take you bush walking if you so wish. Feel the exhilaration of stalking animals, finding new birds or learning the ways of the Baboon Spider and other creepy-crawlies!
Our Tranquility Lapa is situated in a quiet area of the Lodge and offers relaxing massages during the day. Indulge yourself with an Aromatherapy Massage, with only the sounds of nature to provide background music.
We are blessed with dark skies and a bewildering assortment of stars. Our Rangers are skilled at pointing out constellations and deep sky objects using laser pointers and a large telescope as part of our star safaris. See your Zodiac Sign for the first time and learn the ancient stories told by cultures who were mesmerized by the beauty of the night.
