Activities
Tiger fishing: Shayamoya's specialty! Tiger fishing is the truly exciting activity, which we offer. These ferocious fighting game fish are rare to South African waters; however they enjoy the sub tropical conditions of the area. Good sizes have been caught in the Pongolapoort Lake where the official record is 8.3kg. There is also a ranch dam, which is stocked with bass as well as tiger fish. The lodge has a good selection of fishing rods, tackle and boats for hire, and fishing expeditions can be chartered.
Game drives: The morning game drive departs between 6am and 7am seasonally. The afternoon game drive departs between 3pm and 4pm. The drives are 3hrs of fantastic bush experience where our rangers enlighten you on all aspects of nature. Game drives take place on the Phongolo Nature Reserve, the neighboring National Reserve, which is the first Reserve to be proclaimed in Africa by Paul Kruger in 1894. The Reserve has an excellent population of wild life from white rhino, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, giraffe to a wide variety of antelope
Boat cruises: The boat cruise takes place up the Pongola River and into the Lake. The boat is flat bottomed with 12 seats and has a canvas cover overhead. The boat cruise is wonderful for bird watching, sighting of hippo, crocodile and where game can be seen at the water's edge, making for an interesting perspective.
Birding: The area is an extremely rich and rewarding birding destination, boasting around 400 species of birds. Shayamoya has a wide variety of exciting birding habitats on offer most of which is typical Zululand Thornveld. Birding is enjoyed either on the game drive, boat cruise where a fascinating variety of water birds are seen from the water, and guided walks with our experienced game rangers.
Rhino tracking: Many guests enjoy stretching their legs where they encounter game and especially the "prehistoric looking" rhino on foot. Guests are also welcome to take an unguided walk on the Shayamoya property - The Idube Trail.
Mountain biking: A fun time! Trails of 18km from exhilarating, adrenalin pumping downhill runs, to gentle peddling in scenic surroundings scattered with plains game. Please bring your own bike.
Entertainment for children: Kids game drives, nature walks, puzzles, building blocks, paints and colouring in sets, along with DVDs.
