Accommodation

Klein-Aus Vista, situated in the Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, offers a choice of various catered and self-catering accommodation facilities at different locations to meet every traveler's requirement.

Desert Horse Inn: Located in the Aus Mountains at 1,400 metres above sea level, Desert Horse Inn affords grand vistas of mountain scenery and sweeping desert plains. It consists of 24 spacious and tastefully decorated en suite rooms. Relax with sundowners on the wooden deck before enjoying a 3-course meal in the restaurant. Exchange travel experiences and recommendations at the evocative Wild Horse Bar or at the cosy fireplace in the lounge.

Eagle's Nest Chalets: Solitude, silence, space and magnificent sunsets - these are the characteristics of the atmosphere at Eagle's Nest Lodge. A 15 minutes' drive from the reception at the Desert Horse Inn, 8 chalets are nestled against a mountain slope and afford unique views of the boundlessness of the desert. Each of the natural rock chalets sits between massive granite boulders and contains a bathroom, kitchenette, fireplace and private veranda. Meals are served at the Desert Horse Inn restaurant. Take-away breakfast or barbecue packs are available on request.

Geisterschlucht Cabin: The rustic, self-catering Geisterschlucht Cabin nestles against massive granite boulders in a picturesque and sheltered valley of the Aus Mountains. It is ideally suited for families and groups. Only one party at a time will be put up there, regardless of the number of people, and will have the cabin all to itself. The cabin consists of two dormitories with 5 bunk beds each, two showers and two organic toilets. The communal kitchen and dining area is open plan; there is also an outside grill for pleasant evenings together. Barbecue packs are available at the reception (Desert Horse Inn, 6 km away). Guests are more than welcome at the Inn's restaurant (subject to space available, please enquire upon arrival).

Desert Horse Campsite: Large old camel thorn trees greet camping guests at the Desert Horse Campsite in a small valley of the Aus mountains. Each of the ten sites is equipped with a tap, table, grill and windbreak. Barbecue packs are available at the reception of Desert Horse Inn (1.5 km away); those who like to skip cooking for a change are more than welcome at the Inn's restaurant (subject to space available, please enquire upon arrival).

Food

Desert Horse Inn restaurant is where the Inn's guests and Eagle's Nest Chalet guests can enjoy breakfast daily as part of their bed & breakfast accommodation arrangement.

The restaurant serves meals throughout the day and self-catering guests are welcome.

Environment Info

The Succulent Karoo - after soft winter rains a sea of bright flowers is visible in the vast plains of the southern Namib. In Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park near Aus you experience the most bio-diverse desert on earth. It is a landscape of granite mountains, dry riverbeds and sweeping plains. To the east the park (510 km2) borders on the Nama Karoo, and to the north on the dune sea of the Namib, where the Wild Horses roam.

Activities

Klein-Aus Vista offers a host of activities. It is also a starting point for excursions to the Wild Horses or to the deserted diamond settlement of Kolmanskop.

Wild Horses:They roam the sparsely vegetated plains of the Namib Desert in small groups. Over the decades they have conquered the desert as their habitat. They come to drink from the trough at Garub, some 20 km west of Aus. From a hide you can watch the horses and take pictures.

Kolmanskop: When diamonds were found in 1908, a little town with grand mansions rose from the Namib Desert. The deserted diamond settlement of Kolmanskop now offers endless opportunities to take extraordinary pictures.

Luderitz: This harbour town on the Atlantic coast boasts a heritage of magnificent Jugendstil buildings. The Waterfront and the old stone cross, erected by Portuguese seafarers more than 500 years ago, are also well worth a visit.

Other activities inside Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park include:

  • Scenic Drive through the Park
  • Hiking Trails
  • Aus Info Centre.
