Ocean2air has been around since 2002 and has been involved in the evolution of kitesurfing in South Africa to where it is today.

So you are ready to get off the fence - you have been watching this sport for some time and have been meaning to give it a go but never have. Well, the longer you wait the more you are missing out on. Kitesurfing has got to be one of the most exhilarating sports to get into. But how hard is it to start up?

Well the good news is that if you get into the program that Ocean2air has refined into being one of the best and easiest ways to learn this sport, it actually is not that hard. Our instructors are all IKO certified and teach to the IKO standards, and have been teaching for the last 8 years, so you are getting the best instruction around ! We also use 1 way radios to communicate with our students during the lessons so that you get the most out of your lesson !

Teaching with a small 3m kite on wide open warm KZN beaches - the perfect way to get into kitesurfing

The program breaks it down into basics. The instructors give you the understanding of how the kite works and the we take it one step at a time. You start with the basics - they give you the theory behind it all, we will then take that theory and use it in practice, showing you exactly how each component fits in with each other.

The great thing here is that we start this all with kites that are so advanced that if you want to kill the power it is as simple as letting go the bar and it will kill the kite 100%. Once you have the basic understanding that flying a little 3M kite will give you we slowly start increasing the kite size, and the aim is to try and have you in the water being pulled by the kite but with you being able to get direction with kite.

We will show you where not to fly the kite and make the experience one not of hanging on for dear life and hoping that the time is up, but rather one of having fun in a controlled environment and understanding the nuts and bolts that make the whole engine tick.

The lessons are broken down into modules:

MODULE 1 : Basic setup and kite flying (2 hours)

1. wind orientation
2. power zone and kite flying orientation
3. set up of 4 line kite
4. assisted launching and landing
5. emergency procedures
6. basic kite flying

MODULE 2 : Kite Flying / Body Dragging (1 and half hours)

1. Advanced 4 line kite flying
2. water re-launching
3. introduction to water
4. basic body dragging through the water

We recommend taking the above 2 modules together and we will then do a 4 hour lesson. It is better to go straight from module 1 into module 2 so that everything is fresh in your mind. We recommend coming for module 3 on your own equipment (if you don't have then we can provide) so that you are familiar with your own equipment safety and can proceed confidently on your own from then on.

MODULE 3 : Boardwork (1 hour)

1. Set up of equipment
2. Safety systems
3. Advanced body dragging
4. Re cap of anything that you are not sure of.

You should now be able to competently fly the kite and understand what you are doing. We now recommend spending time flying your own equipment and familiarizing yourself with how it all works. You need to practice what we have taught you but if you need the instructor to spend more time with you before you venture out alone, then no problem.

MODULE 4: (1 hour)

One on one lesson with one of our instructors which is designed to give you the basics to get you up and riding on the board. If you are continuously crashing the kite then we recommend going back one stage and spend a little more time body dragging.
