COUNTRY: South Africa
AREA: Zululand and Maputaland
Summary
St Lucia Kayak Safaris was established in 2001 and has been operating kayak safaris in and around the Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu Natal, South Africa since that time.
We have striven to bring awareness and enjoyment of the Wetland Park to both local and foreign visitors, and have a passion for wilderness and non-impact tourism.
Kayaking is one way we can experience nature up close whilst having almost no environmental impact whatsoever - producing little noise, no erosion and no pollution. We are also diligent that our tours produce no littering.
The Wetland Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the conservation of the diversity and natural beauty of this unique area, where visitors are able to combine a safari with a sea-side experience.
General
Kayak Tours can start at any time between 6 am and 3 pm. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best paddling conditions. Tours can take place in most weather conditions except strong winds.
Hippos & Crocs Trip:
This guided kayak safari takes place on the St Lucia Estuary, where the tidal waters are home to a large variety of fauna and flora. Paddle around the mangrove-covered islands and spot basking crocodiles and fishing water-birds. Hear the cry of the fish eagle and view hippos resting in the waters or browsing on the grassy sandbanks.
A great trip for people keen to see wetland bird-life or just to enjoy being in nature; this trip is a fairly non-strenuous flat-water paddle suitable for both experienced and novice paddlers.
We pick you up at your St Lucia accommmodation or our offices in town. The trip lasts around 3 hours.
Wetland Trip:
Exploring the wetland park with us in a 4x4 game drive vehicle you will be able to uncover a few of the treasures such as leopard, black rhino, buffalo, baboons and many antelope species.
Cape Vidal and Mission Rocks are two nodes of the park that are visited during our tour. At low tide this stunning part of the coastline, with rock pools full of sea-life is great for exploring and snorkelling.
On our kayaks we explore the estuary with its mangroves and islands. This is the ideal opportunity to look for water birds, fish eagles and mudskippers. Hippo and Crocodiles are viewed from a safe distance. This is a fun filled experience that is suitable for persons over the age of 12 years. Lunch and refreshments are included.
Mozambique Trips:
We arrange adventure trips into Southern Mozambique. Activities include kayaking, fishing and swimming with dolphins. Accommodation options vary from basic to luxury.
