General
Combine a unique mix of cycling and walking in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage site. Spectacular views accompany the cyclist, while afternoon walks enable a closer view of this daunting landscape.
Our cycle follows tar and dirt roads as it winds its way around the low berg. Designed to allow cyclists the opportunity to enjoy the landscape without the grueling pace or distances of an organized race, the Bushman Tour covers comfortable distances everyday allowing time in the afternoon to explore the areas surrounding each overnight stop.
A support vehicle allows the weary rider an opportunity to hitch a lift up any steep climbs.
Itinerary
Day 1 - Transfer to Underberg
Transfers from Durban and Pietermaritzburg to Underberg. A warm up ride allows the cyclists to explore the local arts, crafts and cheese factory in the area. A briefing will be held after dinner by the trip guides providing an overview of the itinerary, terrain and other relevant issues.
Day 2 - Underberg to Loteni
An enjoyable day’s cycle along dirt roads past farms and rural homesteads. In the afternoon, try to spot a baboon or Mountain Reed buck, or take a walk to Jacob’s Ladder.
Day 3 - Loteni to Glengarry
The morning’s uphill becomes an exhilarating downhill as we enter the Kamberg Reserve. Keep an eye out for wildebeest and stop to examine the bushman rock paintings.
Day 4 - Glengarry to Giant’s Castle
Cycle along farm and forest tracks under the watchful presence of Giant’s Castle. Spot the endangered Lammergeyer or just soak in the sights.
Day 5 - Giant’s Castle to Champagne Castle
The morning is spent on tar cycling through rural villages, while in the afternoon we hit the dirt and finish in the forests surrounding Champagne Castle. Optional trip to Monk’s Cowl in the afternoon.
Day 6 - Champagne Castle to Cathedral Peak
After a morning climb, we settle into some enjoyable sections as we head to the Cathedral Peak camp. Cathedral Peak offers two MTB routes of varying grades for adventurous cyclists wishing to explore the higher slopes of the mountains, as well as numerous short walks.
Day 7 - Cathedral Peak to Hlalanathi Resort
Cycling through villages we have a long decent to the bridge across Woodstock Dam. The tar road stretches out ahead, but with a final leg of single track the end is in sight. Enjoy a sundowner as you savour the view of the Amphitheatre.
Day 8 - Amphitheatre Hike
Spend the day relaxing at the resort or join the hike up the zigzags and chain ladders to the top of the Amphitheatre. Admire the view of the lowlands from the top of Tugela Falls. For those energetic few, try the road cycle from Witsieshoek to Hlalanathi.
Day 9 - Transfer to Durban
Transfers from Hlalanathi to Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Stop for craft shopping and to admire the Howick Falls.
